The world has changed...
Anxiety and depression rates are at epidemic levels. We now live in a rapidly changing world where the advancements of technology are exponential and are outpacing our human capabilities. Talk about overwhelming, huh?
That said, we now have more options at our fingertips than ever before for which, we are told by previous generations that we should be grateful. They however, can’t seem to comprehend that more options doesn’t necessarily mean better.
More choice exposes us to decision fatigue which in itself results in inaction. Social media projects the idea that the grass is always greener, often leaving us questioning whether we are doing the right thing; as a result, we find ourselves juggling multiple projects but rarely achieving anything. The man who chases two chickens never catches any after all.
That said, it’s important to recognise that times have changed and it is no longer reasonable to expect people to stick to one career path, or only have one hobby, or stay in one house for the rest of their life. Yet, just because the options are more accessible, the majority of people still find it difficult to effectively execute.
It would appear that we as a generation have become accustomed to a convenient lifestyle, where everything is delivered to our door at record-speeds. We have lost the concept of patience and fail to realize that if we want to build a fulfilling life, it will take time and effort to build.
There is a famous phrase in the business world that in order to obtain a competitive advantage you need to be cheaper, faster, or better. Unfortunately, in our AI world, where capital gains are the driver behind innovation, the majority of companies tend to focus on being cheaper and faster, and neglect better.
This does not serve our 300,000 year old homo-sapiens brains, who by their very nature, have only managed to survive this long by taking the time to think deeply and apply their cognitive abilities, including advanced reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills to overcoming obstacles.
If we continue at this rate, mental health rates will be unmanageable and that is why we need to act now.
How it began
Do you ever feel unfulfilled and not sure why? Back in 2018, I sure did. I was constantly hearing that “things will get better”, “your twenties are meant to be tough”, “it will all work out” but despite hearing this advice from multiple people it didn’t make me feel any better about my life.
I was anxious, lost, frustrated because I didn’t seem to be achieving any of my goals, and this began to build up to the point where I began to get into a rut, a letter became depressed. I felt I had so much more to give. “This can’t be life” I thought, there must be a fix, so I went out searching for answers.
Therapy seemed like the most appropriate option, but to be honest I had no money to afford a therapist. I enquired through my GP about being assigned one through the NHS but once they told me the waiting times were around 12 weeks I told them not to worry. I also remember feeling like I was “weak” for even needing a therapist.
I tried journaling but I was inconsistent, it required too much of a time commitment, which meant that I was never able to build momentum. In retrospect, the other limitation was that journaling didn’t really help me look forward. I would unload all of the thoughts in my head onto a piece of paper which would temporarily make me feel better, and with a clearer head be able to write some action points for the following day, but it never really helped me look beyond that.
The next day I would complete the action steps but because my goals were so ambitious, I really struggled to see any tangible progress, which of course, wasn’t the case at all. Even after 2 months of journaling my brain couldn’t comprehend that I’d been making strides forward because it was all text (qualitative) and I’m no data scientist.
I was stuck and had to figure out a solution to my own problem. The saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” came to mind and I realized that if I was ever going to achieve my ambitious goals I needed to find a way to zoom out and see the bigger picture.
Being a recent Accounting and Finance graduate I did what I do [or used to do] best, opened Excel and got to work trying to put my life together in a spreadsheet, building and pulling information from different sources to give me a full 360 degree view of my life.
Once I was happy, I began quantifying my life consistently on a monthly basis, associating a number of how fulfilled I was feeling across all the core areas of my life. I figured this way it would be easy to compare to previous months to benchmark and figure out what was going right and wrong in certain areas. Moreover, by only having to do it once a month it was both manageable and it gave me enough time to execute on my action points.
Fast forward to 2023, having not shown anyone for 6 years, I for an unknown reason decided to show some entrepreneurs staying at the same hostel as me in Bali. They took a liking to it and from there we started having fun plotting whether we could take the idea further. This was the beginning of 80k View.
What is 80k View?
80k view is short for 80,000 ft view, which is a metaphorical expression that implies taking a high-level perspective on a particular subject. Imagine you’re flying in a plane - or maybe a rocket at this altitude - 80,000 ft in the air, you look out the window and see earth. In this example, 80K View is the plane and the world is your life.
By zooming out you gain a holistic understanding of your life, enabling you to identify key trends, spot potential challenges or opportunities, and make informed decisions based on a comprehensive outlook.
Just like a life coach, 80k View does not tell you what you should do with your life but it helps you realize your dreams by making them actionable over a certain time period. Whether it’s something you’ve been dying to since you were a kid or something that has briefly crossed your mind and thought, “hey I wouldn’t mind trying that,” jott it down into 80k View and it will help you weave it into your life at a suitable time.
Visually, it displays your life in a line and better yet can help predict where you’ll be if you keep at something through smart projections - similar to how a compound interesting graph work.
Benefits of 80k View
The three key benefits of 80k View:
Discovery: it helps you uncover why you might be feeling unfulfilled and what areas of your life you might need to focus on improving
Direction: it gives you direction on what to focus on next and helps you predict where you'll end up if you continue on this path.
Reflection: in just 15-30 minutes a month you can build a life journal to be proud of.
Who is 80k View built for?
80k View is a solution for busy people who are seeking more fulfilling lives, that perhaps struggle to get themselves going or stay consistent but know deep down if they don’t take action, will live to regret it.
80k View acts as a complimentary service to therapy; or alternative, for those that may not have access or do not wish to see a therapist. It does this by supporting you in becoming your own therapist, following similar therapeutic practices, by getting you to sit down, reflect, and think deeply about your life once a month.
In addition, it can also be seen as an alternative to other apps or traditional day-to-day journaling approaches because you only need to do it once a month; yet you still receive all the benefits of being able to see the bigger picture. So maybe it’s not designed for busy people after all but lazy people?
Overall, it’s for people that want to go places, build one hell of a life story, and who in 80 years time would like to easily be able to look back at all the chapters of their life; the highs, the lows, and all the adventures they had during their time on earth.
80k View key features and functionality:
80,000 foot view: Our flexible fulfillment tracker makes it easy for you to check-in with yourself by dividing up your ‘life’ into different categories. Providing you with a full 80,000 view of what’s going good and why and what’s not going so well and needs to be addressed.
Gamified action plans: as any good therapist will tell you, you are the most informed person when it comes to solving your own problems, therefore we don’t suggest how you should solve your problems but rather help you commit to them by using AI and gamification to keep your action points clear and concise.
Blue sky goal generator: if you feel you’re the type of person who has no shortage of ideas and wants to do everything, write it down in 80k View and it will weave these goals and dreams into your monthly action plans. Alternatively, if you’re feeling a bit lost and really not sure what you want to work on next, it can inspire by suggesting random hobbies based on similar people’s bios.
Accountability Quadrants: You will be able to join accountability quadrants where you have the option to form or join an accountability group (of up to 4 people) to sit down with every week and share your wins and losses with.
